Today, I and several others involved with aspects of Christian formation for the Diocese and some of our congregations will travel to Philadelphia for the annual conference of FORMA. The organization describes their identity and work in these terms:
Forma is an association and dynamic community of Christian educators, formation professionals, and their institutional partners that celebrates and upholds the diverse ministries of Christian formation across the Episcopal Church.
There are members representing 40 states and 60 dioceses. Myra Garnes, our diocesan director of youth and young adult ministry, has been and is deepy and profitably involved with Forma. This will be my first visit with them. I look forward to learning and to sharing what I learn here.
Secondly, a change looking ahead, which I hope will be helpful: I had hoped to bring together folks over several weeks to read and discuss together one of the latest books by John Roberto on Reimagining Faith Formation. John, who has dedicated his life and energy to the reinvigoration of Christian education in the church, will present our diocese's annual Faith Formation Day on May 14th. I am excited that he will be here, and I promise you that anyone involved in, interested in, or concerned about this vital part of church life will benefit richly by being with us on May 14. Registration is now open.
In order to get familiar with what John Roberto is thinking and what he will invited us into, on Wednesday April 6 any and all are invited to come together in-person and online for a one-time presentation and discussion on the Reimagining Faith Formation book. It is available as a paperback and ebook.
Here is our Mercer calendar description of what we hope to do that evening together:
